It was more than 3 years ago that Tim O’Reilly wrote this column, in which he famously proclaimed, “Obscurity is a far greater threat to authors and creative artists than piracy.” With that in mind, I thought I would shine a spotlight on an artist whose music, in my humble opinion, shouldn’t be nearly as obscure as it is.
Also, you’ll hear from a prolific group that I’ve featured before that just released a new full-length CD. It’s a shorter show this week with a slightly different format (Hi, Jason!), but I think you’ll like what you hear…
While I was tempted to make this a big show — 40 in Roman Numerals is XL, after all — I didn’t think you could get much bigger than the return of Puracane, a band that quickly became one of my favorites after I spotted their debut release on Epitonic about six years ago. They’re back with a new touring band and a new CD that you don’t want to miss.
Speaking of things you don’t want to miss, be sure to check out The Chillcast with Anji Bee, another new downtempo podcast that covers a wide range of chill tunes. Anji, of course, is the lead vocalist for Lovespirals, another favorite here in the lounge…
So I ended up getting into a bit of a rant in this show. I’ll try to keep those to a minimum in the future, but sometimes I just have to let it out.
All of this week’s songs are available in iTunes. If you like ‘em all, just click here to buy an iMix that includes all six songs. It’s a cheap and easy way to support the artists and this podcast. Be sure to check out some of the other Dave’s Lounge iMixes on iTunes, while you’re at it.
Okay, so the Dave’s Lounge Shop is down again today. Several graphics on my page are 404 as well. I’m seeing posts on LibSyn’s support forum from people asking why their podcasts aren’t showing up on their feed. I’m also hearing very little from LibSyn beyond a cursory, “We’re moving things around as best we can, so bear with us.” It’s better than nothing, but it still feels a little sketchy. Clearly, their latest hardware upgrade is breaking things left and right.
For this reason, I’m going to push Dave’s Lounge #39 back a week to give the LibSyn guys some time to get their house in order. I want to be sure the Shop is open for next week’s show, because there are a couple of songs from this show that you will want to buy.
In the meantime, I’d like to ask a small favor of you, my dear listeners. I’ve gone into iTunes and created some iMixes of songs that have appeared on Dave’s Lounge. I’d really appreciate it if you would go into iTunes and rate those mixes. If you’d like to buy some of them, too, that would be great, but just rating them would be enough for now. I’m attempting to see if I can use these iMixes as a promotional tool for the podcast itself.
Libsyn appears to have changed some of their internal workings and redirects and such, and it’s broken the Dave’s Lounge Shop. It’s also broken the header images.
I may not be able to fix this until tonight. Sit tight, everyone.
Update (5:45 PM): It looks like the fix is out of my hands. Libsyn is doing all the redirecting, so the problem is on their end. I’ve put in a support ticket for this, but it may take some time before it’s resolved…
Update (8:00 PM): Looks like everything is working again. Feel free to go buy CDs to your heart’s content.
Some folks have asked me in the past if there are any other good downtempo podcasts out there. I’ve recommended Tempo of the Down in the past, though transmissions from that podcast seem to have stopped. A new podcast, however, has popped up — the Idyllic Music Podcast, which is four episodes in and sounding pretty good so far. If you’re looking for some more sounds to help you chill, that’s a good show to check out.
