Dave’s Lounge #188: 5th Anniversary Flashback Mix

So I was trying to whittle down the music I wanted to put in this anniversary show, and it proved to be a nigh-impossible task. There was too much good music from the last five years. That’s when I got the idea — what was I listening to before I opened Dave’s Lounge?

That’s the basis for the 5th anniversary mix. Some of these songs I’ve played before here, and a few others I haven’t. Overall, though, this should give you an idea of the music I was listening to in the years before anyone knew what a podcast was. I dug this stuff. I think you’ll dig it, too.

Feature Rewind Week: Lal Meri, “Lal Meri”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Lal MeriCarmen Rizzo is one of those producers whose influence has been as quiet as it is omnipresent. He’s produced music for big names like Alanis Morrisette, Seal and Coldplay, while at the same time creating lush electronic soundscapes with Dave’s Lounge visitors Delerium and Azam Ali. He was one-half of Povi, a sadly slept-on duo who only released one album on Nettwerk Records. So when he teamed up with Nancy Kaye and Ireesh Lal to form Lal Meri, it shouldn’t have surprised anyone that their self-titled debut album was such a standout. This is a trio that’s going places.

Feature Rewind Week: All India Radio, “Fall”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

All India Radio, the musical brainchild of Australian Martin Kennedy, has been a mainstay on this show since I first played "For Angel" way back on Dave’s Lounge #29 in December of 2005. It was the 2008 release of Fall, however, that took All India Radio to another level. Kennedy teamed up with vocalist Leona Prue and a handful of great musicians to put together one of the best downtempo albums of 2008 and possibly the entire decade. This one’s going to be hard to top. Here’s hoping Kennedy doesn’t stop trying.

Feature Rewind Week: Dive Index, “Mid/Air”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

It was Natalie Walker who informed me about Dive Index, the brainchild of minimalist electronica producer Will Thomas. Dive Index’s debut album, Mid/Air, combined IDM glitch with quality songwriting in a style somewhat reminiscient of Björk, yet still sounding like nothing else I had ever really heard before. This was my favorite album of 2007, and I do hope Will gives us a sequel soon.

Playlist:

  1. "Between Sky and Sea" (feat. Natalie Walker)

  5. "Hoko Onchi" (feat. Ian Masters)
  6. "The World Is Kind" (feat. Natalie Walker)
  7. Background Music: "Sole Fisherman" (feat. Merz)

Dive Index also released a remix album called Collisions, which is also available from on iTunes and eMusic.

Feature Rewind Week: Natalie Walker, “Urban Angel”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Natalie WalkerNatalie Walker was the very first vocalist ever heard on Dave’s Lounge, and her work with Daughter Darling was part of the reason this show was born in the first place. Daughter Darling ended up being a one-off project that served as the springboard to her solo career. Her first album, Urban Angel, remains one of the best albums I’ve ever featured on this show. Natalie has also teamed up with her excellent touring band to form Mouchette, who have recorded two EPs that are now available from Bandcamp.

Natale is currently in the studio recording her third solo album. Don’t forget to check out her second album, With You, which is also available from on iTunes and eMusic.

ArtemisAs the 5th anniversary of this show approaches, I’ve decided to spend this week looking back at some of the great downtempo albums this show has featured over the years. We’ll start with Artemis, whose second album, Gravity, was featured way back in episode #10. Back then, Twitter had yet to be invented, and Facebook had yet to open to the general public. Time doesn’t stop flying, does it?

Dave’s Lounge #187: Come, Dance With Me

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I didn’t have much to say this week, so I decided to let Aimee Mullins do the talking to start the show. Aimee is a double amputee who lost both her lower legs soon after she was born, then went on to become a track star at Villanova University, a model and a fantastic public speaker. You can watch some of her speeches at TED.com.
