Dick Clark And The Lost Craft Of Tastemaking

The passing of Dick Clark this week has sent me on one of those nostalgic trips through my childhood that makes me think how great some things seemed then, but also how much better and worse things are now.

American Bandstand was a simple enough concept — play some new music and show kids dancing to it — but its cultural significance was a result of the way it brought people together, both inside the studio walls and outside. Millions of people gathered around their TV screens to see what this group of kids were digging and how they danced. “It’s got a good beat and you can dance to it” became a punchline largely because, for most big rock and roll songs of the time — and still today, really — it was truth.

Dick Clark stood at the center of this with a clear understanding of music’s ability to unite people. In an era where racial segregation was the norm, he brought Caucasian & African-American performers onto the show seamlessly, pushing boundaries without feeling the least bit unobtrusive. “The Twist” was just a dance, after all. Anyone could do it. Just as importantly, though, Clark had a keen ear for what music was worth playing. American Bandstand found good songs and made them hits. If all those viewers saw those kids really digging a record, they wanted it.

Who has that influence now? Who’s out there looking for new music and showing the world what’s good? Who are the modern tastemakers?

As Frank Zappa explained in this video, the music industry went into decline the moment that record labels began to assume the tastemaker role that Clark and others held during the 60s:

In the heyday of Bandstand, record labels never tried to be arbiters of taste. They threw everything against the wall, saw what stuck, and tried to make more of what did. They gambled a lot more, and sometimes they won. We don’t see that in popular music anymore. By assuming the role of tastemakers that Dick Clark and other DJs held, the labels became the gatekeepers. They claimed the power to say what was good and what wasn’t, turning the task of getting signed to a record deal into a race to the top of a mountain. Never mind that the one-sided nature of those contracts meant the mountain was made of feces. Signing a record deal meant you “made it”.

Of course, we all understand now that this is not the case. Signing a record deal means giving someone else the right to get paid for what you recorded.

After becoming the gatekeepers, the big labels consolidated to the point where now only three giant corporations control a whopping 75% of recorded music. They found loopholes in payola laws to prevent disc jockeys from becoming influential enough to tell listeners what’s good. Only they could say that. Relaxing media restrictions to allow one or two corporations to buy up radio only consolidated their power further. Radio is incapable of breeding tastemakers now. Labels simply feed radio a pre-selected playlist and practically demand that we buy in, and what they tell us is good now is often determined by algorithm more than by inspiration.

That might explain why listening to the radio today sounds like listening to the decline of an empire. Everything is rigidly programmed, and nothing is left to chance. American Bandstand was successful because it took chances musically. It put new sounds on TV and gave its audience something different and exciting. As the big labels consolidated and turned more and more conservative, though, they stopped giving most new sounds a chance and only released music that some algorithms suggested would sell millions. You can hear the end result on the radio now — an endless barrage of stale club music, interrupted only by commercials and the occasional Adele tune.

In the late 90s, as radio consolidation was sweeping the nation, MP3.com started showing music fans how different things could be. Just like that, the Internet made distributing music so much easier. 15 years later, independent music is flourishing, thanks in no small part to the Internet, and many more artists are discovering ways to make a living on their own without a record deal.

The problem remains, though — how do you find the good music? Sure, lots of people are out there making good music, but most of them still struggle to get heard. Not every indie band is capable of thinking up an awesome gimmick that will get them tens of millions of views on YouTube:

Is there room then for new tastemakers, new Dick Clarks, new guiding hands that point people to something great? Some would suggest that indie music no longer needs a Dick Clark now, because crowdsourcing takes care of everything. You hear a song, you like it, you tell your friends, who tell their friends, and on down the line until the band becomes popular enough to support itself. Then those bands you like get fed into more algorithms, which turn out more music liked by those who like the bands you like.

Could you imagine rock & roll being discovered this way? Doesn’t feeding people similar music based on their own taste all the time reduce the chance that they’ll ever hear something truly original that they just might like? And what happens when the algorithm goes wrong? After all, if you like Edith Piaf, you probably don’t want the computer to feed you Norah Jones. (Yes, that actually happened to a friend of mine.)

What’s even worse is that most people simply don’t differentiate between major label releases and indie releases. They just hear a song they like, they tell their friends about it, and everyone buys it, often oblivious to the fact that their money doesn’t go to the artists, but to lobbyists in Washington who convince Congress to pass stricter copyright laws that make it increasingly harder to share any music. We stopped SOPA, sure, but they’ll try again.

It’s been my hope for a while that music podcasters would fill this void, finding and sharing the new indie sounds that would get people listening and/or dancing. Eight years in, though, podcasting is merely micro-media, just scraping the edges of a few genres. Has any podcast had a tangible impact on music? Does the niche nature of the medium (not to mention the licensing headaches that surround music in general) even allow for this to happen? Or do music podcasts simply miss that visual element that Clark — and later, MTV — exploited so well? After all, it’s one thing to hear a song, but it’s another thing entirely to watch a room full of teenagers dancing to it and try to emulate what they’re doing in your living room.

Indie music might be thriving, and the Internet might eventually break the gatekeepers, even as we fight to make sure it’s not the other way around, but modern music still feels like it needs the tastemakers, the influencers, the enablers, the guiding hands that can point those who want new music to the quality stuff. Dick Clark was once the king of the tastemakers. Alas, the king is dead now, and “long live the algorithms” seems to be the cry that proceeds him. Maybe I’m romanticizing a relic from a bygone era, but when it comes to new music discovery, I would take one American Bandstand over 10,000 Pandoras any day of the week. Indie music could make pretty good use of a relic like that right about now.

I tend not to talk about sports on this show, but big things happened to two of my teams in the last week. The Pittsburgh Steelers made it to the Super Bowl for the 2nd time in 3 years, while the Carolina Railhawks, the soccer team I’ve supported here for the last 4 years or so, suddenly doesn’t exist anymore. There’s a strange yin-and-yang feeling to these things happening in the same week. They’re both a reminder, too, that we all have only so many seasons, so we should enjoy them while they’re here. I hope you enjoy the music this week, too.

A Quick Note to Dave’s Lounge App Owners

Those of you who own the Dave’s Lounge app for iPhone and Android might have noticed that it hasn’t been getting updated properly for the last couple of months.

After being alerted to this by a listener today, I spoke to Rob Walch at Wizzard Media, and we figured out what the problem was. There’s an extra step required to get the app updated. I wasn’t aware of that extra step before. I am now. All the latest episodes should now be available to app owners, and hopefully, this will put an end to the delays.

Also, the way Dave’s Lounge and Liberated Syndication are set up right now may hold a few benefits for app owners in the near future. Further bulletins will be released on Twitter and Facebook as events warrant…

A couple days ago, a friend of mine discovered Natalie Walker and appeared to be as instantly smitten by her voice as I was. This suddenly got me to thinking that it’s been a while since we’ve heard from Natalie around here. Her Facebook page hasn’t been updated since March and has been overrun by spambots. Her "official" web site has been updated only once since April, and that was a note from the label touting one of her songs appearing on a cable TV shot. Myspace pages for both Natalie and Mouchette seem sparse on new info as well.

So if anyone knows where Natalie is and what she’s up to right now, have her stop by the Lounge and let us know. Thanks.

This week’s episode is dedicated to Keith Shapiro, co-host of the Confessing the Blues podcats, who passed away unexpectedly on August 5. Keith was a fantastic resource for blues music and blues history, and as someone who DJs blues dances on the side here in Durham, I will miss his contributions to music podcasting quite a bit. (Ironically, Keith hated trip hop and railed against DJs who played Portishead at blues dances, but I’ve never held that against him.)

Carmen Rizzo is one of those producers whose influence has been as quiet as it is omnipresent. He’s produced music for big names like Alanis Morrisette, Seal and Coldplay, while at the same time creating lush electronic soundscapes with Dave’s Lounge visitors Delerium and Azam Ali. He was one-half of Povi, a sadly slept-on duo who only released one album on Nettwerk Records. So when he teamed up with Nancy Kaye and Ireesh Lal to form Lal Meri, it shouldn’t have surprised anyone that their self-titled debut album was such a standout. This is a trio that’s going places.

All India Radio, the musical brainchild of Australian Martin Kennedy, has been a mainstay on this show since I first played "For Angel" way back on Dave’s Lounge #29 in December of 2005. It was the 2008 release of Fall, however, that took All India Radio to another level. Kennedy teamed up with vocalist Leona Prue and a handful of great musicians to put together one of the best downtempo albums of 2008 and possibly the entire decade. This one’s going to be hard to top. Here’s hoping Kennedy doesn’t stop trying.

It was Natalie Walker who informed me about Dive Index, the brainchild of minimalist electronica producer Will Thomas. Dive Index’s debut album, Mid/Air, combined IDM glitch with quality songwriting in a style somewhat reminiscient of Björk, yet still sounding like nothing else I had ever really heard before. This was my favorite album of 2007, and I do hope Will gives us a sequel soon.

Natalie Walker was the very first vocalist ever heard on Dave’s Lounge, and her work with Daughter Darling was part of the reason this show was born in the first place. Daughter Darling ended up being a one-off project that served as the springboard to her solo career. Her first album, Urban Angel, remains one of the best albums I’ve ever featured on this show. Natalie has also teamed up with her excellent touring band to form Mouchette, who have recorded two EPs that are now available from Bandcamp.

Aimee is a double amputee who lost both her lower legs soon after she was born, then went on to become a track star at Villanova University, a model and a fantastic public speaker. Dave’s Lounge re-opens for 2010 with a few changes:

1.) By popular demand, I’ve brought back the original theme music, my song "By Candlelight," which is now available as a free download on both Soundcloud and TheSixtyOne.com. At some point, I want to put this song on iTunes and eMusic as well, but that might be a few months down the road.

2.) I’ve decided to make Dave’s Lounge a bi-weekly podcast, rather than a weekly podcast. This is in large part because of my struggles to keep this show on a regular schedule for much of last year. My hope was that the 200th show would coincide with this show’s 5th anniversary, but now that it’s clear this will not happen, I figure it’s best to make this show fit my schedule, rather than the other way around. I know this will disappoint a few listeners out there, but bear in mind this is only one of several hobbies I’m pursuing, and I’m still trying to find the right balance for all of them. Hopefully, this will help.

So I fell behind in just about every facet of my life after my recent trip to Philadelphia — which was not only a great time, but also a bit of a learning experience about life in an old city. My friends and I did a lot of walking that weekend, even though it was rainy and cold out, because everything was close by, and driving anywhere was expensive and inconvenient.

People live and work and play in cities like that all over the world. There’s a certain romance to that. It makes me wish I didn’t live in a sprawling town where car ownership is a practical requirement…

There are a lot of artists I would love to promote on this show, but I can’t, because they’re signed to RIAA labels. These major labels are actively trying to punish music fans for sharing music they love with others and helping to grow their favorite artists’ audience. They’re also forcing new music companies out of business by charging those companies exorbitant sums of money for the right to expose their music to new potential customers. Chances are good that the RIAA would sue me for hundreds of thousands of dollars if I played one song in a major label catalog on this podcast — even if that label’s marketing arm asked me to play it!

So this podcast remains dedicated to promoting music by independent artists and labels, because they understand the value of podcast promotion. We don’t need the RIAA to make good music. Let’s hope more people understand that and vote for the music industry they want with their wallets.

Now that it appears the majority of our Feedburner trouble is behind us, we can get back to sharing some new music with the world. A few months ago, the awesome Properly Chilled podcast talked about the idea that downtempo electronic BPMs seem to be rising every year, almost to the point where downtempo means midtempo. This week’s playlist represents that more midtempo side of the genre very well, I think.

Feedburner is Broken

If you’re an iTunes user wondering why Dave’s Lounge #169 hasn’t shown up in iTunes yet, there’s your answer. For whatever reason, Feedburner hasn’t been able to access any of my WordPress sites on Bluehost since Monday. I talked to BlueHost about it, but they claim they’re not blocking anything, and since I can load the feed directly in my browser, I know it’s accessible. Why Feedburner can’t get it, however, remains a complete mystery to me.

And since Feedburner offers nothing in the way of tech support, I’m pretty much stuck here.

My only real option here is to stop using Feedburner and get the iTunes page to redirect to http://www.daveslounge.com/feed/. At this point, however, I’m not entirely sure how to get it to do that, and Apple’s instructions haven’t been much help. So until I figure this out, you’ll have to get the latest episodes of Dave’s Lounge directly from the web site.

UPDATE: Thanks to my buddy Rob at Wizzard Media and the Today In iPhone podcast, the iTunes feed should update properly within the next 48 hours or so. If you’re not using iTunes, however, and you’re subscribed to the Feedburner feed, unsubscribe from that and use http://www.daveslounge.com/feed/ instead. Once iTunes stops pointing to Feedburner, I’m going to blow away that feed and use my own URL instead. Thanks, and apologies for the inconvenience.

Bitstream Dream: Gone, But Not Forgotten

To this day, I still don’t fully understand why Rom DiPrisco decided to pull all the music he recorded under the band name Bitstream Dream from the web. My guess is his new career as video game soundtrack producer began taking up all of his time, and he didn’t want to set expectations for new Bitstream Dream material in the future. After all, if making music is already your full-time job, you might want to do something else to blow off steam.

That said, I still wish Rom had left some trace his Bitstream Dream work out there, if for no other reason than for archival purposes. It’s one thing to pull the music out of online stores — that sort of thing usually costs money to keep up — but to leave almost no trace of the project seems like such a waste. If nothing else, just point the domain to a page saying the project is no longer active and provide a link to an archive of the music. Why try to erase art that was once part of your life?

Of course, it’s his art, and he can do what he wants with it. (And if nothing else, I just found out he did leave Spiralglide up on eMusic.) That said, Dave’s Lounge is my show, and if I want, I can share an old episode full of Bitstream Dream music. Because it’s worth sharing.

It’s been a crazy week here — parents’ anniversary, work-related functions, dumping Verizon DSL for Road Runner, lots of football, etc. — and I’m still trying to sort through a backlog of music submissions. New music returns next week. Promise.

So you might seen me mention on my Twitter feed this week (and in past weeks) that Verizon DSL service has suddenly become quite useless inside my house. While there’s one local Verizon repairman who’s sympathetic to my cause, my complaints have, for the most part, fallen on deaf ears. I’m sure Verizon would love to offer me FiOS, expect that there’s no timetable at all for FiOS rollout here in Durham, North Carolina.

I would leave Verizon tomorrow, as I’m out of contract, but my only other option is Time Warner Cable, which is more expensive, and their apparent lack of interest in fixing a malfunctioning junction box behind my house is the reason that I switched to Verizon in the first place. So I have two options for high-speed Internet access at my house, and neither of them really work properly. So what do I do now? Seriously, if anyone out there has suggestions, post a comment here, because I’m starting to miss having an Internet connection I can rely on.

I had a sense that Merge of Equals was capable of some great music after hearing their contributions to Cosmic Chill Lounge Vol. 3. What I didn’t know, however, was just how many compilations featured Zurich-based producer Flavio Maspoli & Friends before then. No surprise, then, that their debut album, Intoxicating, does not disappoint. This is more than just a collection of tracks taken from compilations. Merge of Equals’ music demonstrates a wide variety of emotions — a sort of versatility you don’t usually see in downtempo. I think y’all are really going to like this album.

Amazon Cancels Associates Program for NC Residents

This showed up in my inbox this morning:

We are writing from the Amazon Associates Program to notify you that your Associates account has been closed as of June 26, 2009. This is a direct result of the unconstitutional tax collection scheme expected to be passed any day now by the North Carolina state legislature (the General Assembly) and signed by the governor. As a result, we will no longer pay any referral fees for customers referred to Amazon.com or Endless.com after June 26. We were forced to take this unfortunate action in anticipation of actual enactment because of uncertainties surrounding the legislation’s effective date.

Please be assured that all qualifying referral fees earned prior to June 26, 2009 will be processed and paid in full in accordance with our regular referral fee schedule. Based on your account closure date of June 26, 2009, any final payments will be paid by September 1, 2009.

In the event that North Carolina repeals this tax collection scheme, we would certainly be happy to re-open our Associates program to North Carolina residents.

You can read more about this issue here. This isn’t as huge a loss for Dave’s Lounge as it is for some others, as I was only making $20/month on the average from Amazon, and that was in part because of some help from other listeners. (Robert Fischer was a big help in this regard.) Still, Amazon Associates commissions were usually enough to cover web site and podcast hosting for a year, and now that’s gone.

So until this matter between Amazon and NC lawmakers is settled, I would advise everyone out there not to use the Amazon links on this web site. I plan to remove some Amazon links from this site in the next few days. I’m also going to look for some alternatives to Amazon, because unless iTunes sales pick up (or lots of listeners start signing up for eMusic accounts this weekend), I’ll need some other way to help cover this podcast’s expenses. Dave’s Lounge has always been able to pay for itself, and I’d really like that to continue.

A couple years ago, I stumbled upon the work of the late Alan Watts, a 20th century writer and speaker who helped to popularize Eastern philosophy with Western audiences. You can hear more of Watts’ speeches by subscribing to the Alan Watts Podcast.

Dave’s Lounge #161 (w/ Listener Poll)

Some of you might have heard about eMusic’s recent deal with Sony Music and the price increase that went along with it. I’m a bit torn about this deal myself. On the one hand, even though eMusic’s prices have jumped 66%, eMusic subscribers will still pay less per MP3 than they would buying music from iTunes or Amazon, and there’s still a great selection of indie music there. On the other hand, that price jump is an obvious concession to an RIAA label — especially one that once thought releasing CDs filled with malicious rootkit software was "no big deal" — and it makes eMusic less valuable to existing customers. Plus, eMusic has not handled its critics well.

If you’re an eMusic customer, I’d like to know your reaction to all this. Do you plan to remain with eMusic in spite of this deal, or are you canceling your subscription? Please answer this poll, and feel free to leave a comment here, too, and let me know if you think Dave’s Lounge should continue its marketing relationship with eMusic.

1.) Thanks to a whole slew of new music submissions, I have way too many tunes in my queue. So I’ve decided to expand the show a bit from 6 songs a week to 7. I hope all of you enjoy the extra tune each week.

Dave’s Lounge #156: The 4th Anniversary Mix

For the most part, trip hop and lindy hop have nothing in common. (A couple of girls who requested I play Portishead and Massive Attack at a blues dance in Durham last week might suggest otherwise, but we won’t listen to them for now.) However, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the passing of Frankie Manning, a swing dance legend who toured the world and appeared in films in the 1930s, then enjoyed a long second act as “The Ambassador of Lindy Hop.” I remember attending a workshop he taught in Greensboro about 6 years ago. He was 88 at the time, and he spent half that class flirting with his 20-something lesson partner. He was dancing and flirting right up until he died at the age of 94. There’s a lesson in this, I think.

You wouldn’t think Frankie Manning would be connected with this podcast, really, but as I explain at the top of the show this week, everything is connected. We might not see the connections, but they’re still there.

Y’know, if Anji Bee can talk about Sasha Vujacic on her site, I figure I can mention my Carolina Railhawks here. Not only did I get to see our new-look football club win its USL season opener against Minnesota on Saturday night, but I got to spend 30 minutes jamming with these guys:

That’s me in the vest up front, pounding away on the big bass drum. And that’s the North Carolina A&T drumline playing behind me. Yes, that was as awesome as it looked. Plus, we won the game, which was also awesome.

(This episode almost didn’t make it out tonight. I upgraded to a newer, faster hard drive last week and did a clean reinstall of Windows XP and all my software, including my new copy of Sonar Home Studio 7 — which still crashed on me for no apparent reason. It calmed down after the initial crash, though, so hopefully it won’t give me any more trouble than that. I’m still tweaking the audio settings on my voiceovers. It was a little softer than it should have been in this episode, so I’ll try to fix that later…)

This sort of a milestone episode, number 150, but I didn’t want to make too big a fuss about it, especially since the 4th anniversary of this podcast is just a month and half away. Still, I wanted to do something a little different this week, so I decided to go digging in the virtual crates in search of a theme. Along the way, I found a lot of really good tunes from bands that aren’t active anymore. I thought I might share some of those works with you here. After all, it would be a shame if some of these songs were completely lost to history…

Those of you who were following me on Twitter last week probably saw me raving about Thru You, a project by Israeli funk producer Kutiman in which he took dozens of random videos of people on YouTube singing and playing musical instruments and spliced them into one of the most awesome breakbeat collages you’ve ever seen or heard. I recorded this show the night before a historic day in America — the inauguration of Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States, and the first non-caucasian President in our nation’s history. That’s something many Americans (myself included) did not expect to see in our lifetimes.

Obama is a major proponent of volunteerism and service to others, and the more I see examples of this, the more I realize how little I’ve volunteered myself, and it makes me wonder if there’s more I should be doing to help others, especially given the number of times I’ve said on this show that all we have is each other. For now, I can only hope that this little show has done its part to help make your day a little bit more enjoyable. It’s a small thing, but I hope it’s something…

We often remember each year by the music it gave us, and 2008 gave us a lot of fantastic music. Thus, this end-of-year special highlights your favorite downtempo tunes from the past year. A few of the selections surprised me, but for the most part, these are a lot of my favorites, too, and I hope y’all enjoy having them all together in one big 110-minute mix.

This week I talk a bit about Natalie Walker’s gig last Friday at the Tin Angel in Philadelphia. Short version: Natalie was excellent, and her backing band is just fantastic. Bob Scott, who was nice enough to put me up for the weekend, offers his recap of the evening here. I have some video from that gig that I plan to post here very soon, though it really doesn’t do justice to the quality of the music played that night.

This week’s show features one of several free tracks now available from All India Radio’s web site. It’s a collection of outtakes and previously unreleased songs from the sessions that brought us Fall, which was featured on Dave’s Lounge #124. The collection is called Fallout, and you can download them here. Nice touch. More bands should do this sort of thing.

As you might have noticed, new episodes are now being recorded on Tuesday nights instead of Monday nights. That will continue for the rest of the year. Hopefully, it will reduce the number of potential interruptions this fall.

So I got back last night from the New Media Expo in Las Vegas, where I had an absolute blast. It was tons of fun meeting and hanging out with so many great podcasters, including Anji Bee from The Chillcast, Brian Ibbott from Coverville, Roxanne and Shane from Beachwalks, Ariel Hyatt from Ariel PR, Dan Klass from The Bitterest Pill, Rob Walch from Podcast411 and Today in iPhone, CC Chapman from Accident Hash, Charles Stepczyk from Insomnia Radio, Elsie from Elsie’s Yoga Kula… the list could go on forever, really. Plus, the Coverville 500 party was spectacular, and we all had a ton of fun out on the strip. I’ll have photos from the New Media Expo up here very soon.

Unfortunately, I stayed out late and didn’t get much sleep while I was there, and I am heinously jet-lagged. So I’ve decided to release an encore performance of Dave’s Lounge #50, which includes a speech I gave at a conference at Duke University three years ago. A few things have changed since then, but a lot of it still applies today, and it’s kind of amazing how so few people, both musicians and podcasters, don’t know about this. Perhaps I need to publish this info somewhere else on the web…

A few things worth nothing this week. First off, you’ll notice that I’ve redesigned the Dave’s Lounge web site, so hopefully it looks a bit cleaner and is easier to navigate. I plan on adding a few new features to the site soon, but in the meantime, stop by and let me know what you think of the new look.

Secondly, instead of doing a Natalie Walker feature this month, I’m going to play one new song from her new album, With You, in every new show released in the month of August. In addition, I’m teaming up with Dorado Records to give away free CD copies of With You to Dave’s Lounge listeners. I’ll announce the details of that giveaway next week.

Warren Ellis used to write a column about comics called Come In Alone. The title referred to the only way people can enjoy a comic book. We can experience other media — movies, music, etc. — together with friends or complete strangers, but comics were almost exclusively experience by one person at a time. I wonder, sometimes, if we experience music the same way a bit too often…

Dave’s Lounge #25 Revisited

So I was planning on saving this encore of Dave’s Lounge #25 for next week, when I will probably be sleeping off my weekend excursion to Virginia Beach, but the 100-degree heat here in North Carolina has slowed me down considerably, and not wanting to leave y’all without music this week, I figured now was as good a time as any to revisit this hour-long milestone episode.

A few notes about this show:

“By Candlelight,” the theme song to Dave’s Lounge, is now available exclusively from Amie Street.
When episode #25 was first released, Musetta was still known as Pan.
Natalie Walker left Daughter Darling to pursue a solo career just weeks after episode #25 came out.
About one-third of the podcasters included in that bumper halfway through the show are either no longer podcasting or have moved on to new online projects.
Gasoline in America was about a dollar per gallon cheaper than it is now. Heady days, huh?

I’m very pleased to present music from The Atomica Project’s new album, Grayscale. Longtime listeners know I’ve spun plenty of tunes from the Atomica Project’s debut release, Metropolitan — back when they were still known just as Atomica — and this Chicago-based band has put together yet another strong offering of heartbroken trip hop. It’s not an upbeat album by any stretch, but it’s still great music that absolutely deserves your time.

As of this evening, if you visit the iTunes page for this podcast, it will appear as if there are no episodes available. However, if you subscribe to the podcast, you’ll actually get the latest episode and a full list of everything currently available in the RSS feed. It’s an odd software quirk brought on by my recent upgrade to WordPress 2.5.1, and hopefully, it will be fixed soon. If you’re a longtime subscriber in iTunes, though, hopefully you won’t notice a thing. (Thanks for bringing it to my attention, Bob. I might not have noticed the RSS feed was broken without your email.)

In the meantime, I’m fighting off a really bothersome cough this week, so you won’t hear much of my voice, but you will hear some great tunes from the new Sine Music compilation Cosmic Chill Lounge, Vol. 2, which is available in DRM-free format from iTunes. (It’s not on eMusic yet, but hopefully they’ll add it there soon.) Thanks to the folks at Sine Music for hooking me up with this compilation.

WordPress and Feedburner Issues

It seems my recent upgrade to WordPress 2.5 has completely erased my RSS feed in Feedburner. I am looking into this issue and hope to have it fixed very soon. In the meantime, if you would like to download back episodes of Dave’s Lounge, go here.

UPDATE: I think the Feedburner RSS feed is fixed now, and all the missing files should get repopulated in iTunes before the day is over. Hopefully.

New Media Expo

I will be attending the New Media Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada, on August 14-16. If you live in Las Vegas, or if you’re a podcaster who is attending this event, and you’d like to meet up at some point during this weekend, send me an email, and we’ll figure it all out.
